WESTERN AFRICA

The working repertoire in Mauritania covers Moorish griot music with ardin and tidinit, Hassaniya song, and Pulaar and Soninke repertoire. Nouakchott recording is closely tied to family griot traditions. Most recordings are made in Hassaniya Arabic, French, Pulaar and Soninke, with titles set in the Arabic script, with Latin used for other languages. Metadata then needs one fixed Latin transliteration of the artist name, a language tag matching what is sung, and the right-to-left original kept in an alternate title field.

The currency in use is Mauritanian ouguiya (MRU). Earnings are reported in the currency the platform pays out in rather than in each local currency, so the rate between reporting and withdrawal matters when planning. Most listening happens through YouTube, radio and ceremony and wedding performance. Which stores and platforms a release reaches in this territory varies and is subject to current availability, eligibility and platform rules.
